April is recognized as Autism acceptance month. A times used to raise awareness, give understanding, and encouraging acceptance for individual with autism spectrum disorder. In 2008 the united states nations general assembly declared April 2nd as World autism awareness day. In April 2011, the autism self-advocacy network began referring to April as Autism awareness month, promoting education and acceptance towards autism. Along with understanding and respecting people with the spectrum as people who are capable of living their life to the full.
Some organizations such as the Autism Society of america have begin shifting from “autism awareness month” to “autism acceptance month” promoting being more accepting and inclusive to people with autism spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition which affects how people interact, communicate, and see the world. By promoting acceptance and research more into autism spectrum disorder it is expected that the life quality for those with the spectrum to improve. In 2018 a study done by Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders suggest that acceptance may lower the risk of depression and improve mental health, while lacking acceptance may lead to depression and stress. Acceptance from people around those with autism spectrum disorder improves self-acceptance, so people being more accepting may improve hundreds of lives and bring more awareness.
