On May 16th, 2024  California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, visit Manual Arts High her Alma Mater.  Shirley Weber is an accomplished African American politician and academic who has made significant contributions to public service and education. Born on September 20, 1948, in Hope, Arkansas, she later moved to California, where she became a prominent figure in both fields. Weber earned her Ph.D. in communication from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and subsequently joined the faculty at San Diego State University, where she taught Africana Studies for over four decades. Her academic career was marked by a commitment to social justice, equity, and advocacy for marginalized communities. Weber transitioned to politics, where she has continued to champion these values. In 2012, she was elected to the California State Assembly, representing the 79th district, where she authored several landmark pieces of legislation, particularly in the areas of education reform and civil rights. In 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her as California’s Secretary of State, making her the first African American to hold the position. In this role, Weber has focused on expanding voter access and ensuring the integrity of the state’s electoral processes. Her dedication to public service and her impactful career reflect a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of Californians and promoting democratic values.
