According to a LAUSD News Release, Down Syndrome Awareness Day Commemorated throughout The Los Angeles Unified School District. March 21st as Down Syndrome Awareness Day in the District suggests that Los Angeles Unified enhances support to all communities to destigmatize the current social views of Down Syndrome. Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson stated “LAUSD is committed to making all environments inclusive while tending to the needs of all students regardless of disability.” It was marked down as an Awareness Day to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and wellbeing of people with Down Syndrome. As a school district that educates students and supports families from diverse communities, we must recognize and empower historically discriminated and left-behind communities. This resolution will continue to foster inclusion and help raise awareness of how people with Down Syndrome play an important role in our communities. Together, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone is valued and supported
Every year on April 2 we spread awareness for people who have autism. The United Nations General Assembly declared April 2 to be World Autism Awareness Day, stating that it will help highlight the struggles that people who have autism go through everyday. The day is supposed to encourage others to help improve the quality of life for those who live with autism. Here at Manual Arts we have several students who have autism, which is why it is important for all of us to acknowledge World Autism Awareness Day. Although World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, Manual Arts celebrated on April 23. Not only should we participate on April 2 or April 23, but we should try to participate in improving the quality of life for people with autism everyday.
