On February 3, 2024 The International Newcomer Student Leadership Conference was held at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, hundreds of students from countries all over the world participated in the event which was sponsored by the Division of Instruction and the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department( MMED) of the LAUSD. The MMED serves about 7,000 newcomers in middle and high school providing English and social emotional support while building on their own cultural and linguistic development. The event held Workshops to help students build leadership skills as well as, learn about community resources. Students heard from role models, including district leaders along with former and current international newcomer students. This conference was held in Spanish and translated in to other languages such as English, Armenian, Arabic, Mandarin, Korean and French while they were introduced to examples of successful adults that had immigrated to this country. Los Angeles Unified teachers and other employees gave speeches and showed videos of their experiences in the United States with the theme of “Turning Dreams into a Reality.
